What makes you a schuh person?

I am a fashion conscious individual and keep up with the latest trends, and probably have enough shoes to open up my own ‘schuh Shop’. I use my infectious personality to motivate my staff and create a friendly, relaxed and professional environment for our valued customers.

This is your schuh life! Tell us how it happened?

Now then, let me have a think about this!! I started as a ‘wee’ Saturday girl at our Market Street branch, Manchester back in February 1994. I worked in both Manchester and Leeds during my time at university. On completing my studies transferred back to Leeds part-time and became full-time. I was later promoted to Trainee Manager in Liverpool. I have worked as a deputy manager in Commercial street (Leeds), Argyle Street (Glasgow) and Market Street (Manchester). I managed my first store in Hull in May 2000, then moved to Newcastle in October 2001 as store manager and currently manage our Leeds Briggate store since June 2002. If you are ambitious, have drive and determination to succeed, then a career is available for you at schuh!!

So what do you do all day??

Well, what can I say, every day is a different day!! My job role is varied from managing the day to day running of a busy store which includes providing a high standard of customer service, training and developing of the team, and managing the product to meet the customers’ needs. As well as running the store, I help with some field responsibilities which include organising and planning of training days, mentoring concession managers and completing our weekly regional newsletter.

And where do you want to go from here?

schuh offers great career progression which has been proved in my work history. I’m an ambitious and career driven individual and waiting for the right opportunity to arise, hopefully into field management.

What’s your favorite thing about working at schuh?

I have got to say the people. During my time at schuh I have met lots of different people who have supported me through my development. I am now returning the favour and take great satisfaction from training and developing individuals to further progress their careers.

Psst tell us a secret! How can I get your job?

My job, you can’t have it - its mine!!! Well if you are committed, passionate, hardworking and determined to succeed then there is no secret. Provide the right attitude and the rest will follow!!

What makes you a schuh person?

Anyone who has shopped in any of our stores or if you know someone who has works for us before, will know who we are! We work very hard at what we do and have a passion for success! Our business is about PEOPLE! From the customers we serve every day to the staff we work with! We pride ourselves on providing a unique service in a unique environment! ....that’s what makes me a schuh person!

This is your schuh life! Tell us how it happened?

Once upon a time there was a part timer who just worked on a Saturday for 4 hours as a sales assistant in a shiny new Oxford street store some 9 years ago!! After finishing with his studies, he then decided he wanted a Management career in Retail! And so the story goes... he became a full timer, then moved up to a customer service supervisor, then to a trainee manager, then a junior deputy, then on to a senior deputy, then came the big change to becoming the stores personnel manager, then a year on became a Men’s floor manager then on to become the Ladies floor manager for schuh’s Flagship store in Oxford street! …The End. NOT! He then went on to become a store manager in our brand new store in Kingston and lived happily ever after…

So what do you do all day?

What do I Do? ‘ALOT’ is the short answer! Managing a management team of 5 and a staff team of about 41 staff is no easy feat! So there are always things going on and things to organise! All managers in our store are very hands on and you will usually find me on the shop floor in direct contact with my customers and my staff, having a laugh, joking around, a-hmm… I mean working. Customer service is paramount in what we do at schuh, so all my efforts are basically geared towards making sure all you lovely people come and have a great experience in our store! That may mean re-merchandising products making the floor look its best, training the team so they give our customers the best service possible, talking with brands we work with, and generally making sure things run smoothly! Every day is different, so we expect the unexpected!

And where do you want to go from here?

I realised with schuh early on that you can go wherever you want to as long as you know what it takes to get there! (I hope I do by now!?!) The opportunities are numerous and progression is actually expected of you here in schuh! Not to move forward is to move backward! To continue my own story... I would like to see myself running a big store, and then stepping up to a regional Managers job.

What's your favourite thing about working at schuh?

The best things about working with schuh are the people around you and the impact we all have on each other. Whether it’s the impact you have on the people you manage or the things you learn from the people you meet. The discounts are good, the opportunities for progression are there and the freedom to express your own unique style is promoted and encouraged!

Psst tell us a secret! How can I get your job?

How do you get my job... hhmmm... Well if you ask really REALLY nicely...lol. A lot of hard work and a focus on success. If you want it and work hard for it, it’s very possible you can have it! But hopefully not too soon, I’m enjoying myself! To be honest, you need to be a good people person, have a good attitude, be self-motivated and have a passion for success and excellent customer service!

What colour shoes are you wearing?

I am currently wearing some Navy Blue Pointer’s, wicked brand that feel good to wear and keep me lookin’ swagged out. (I am too old for that language lol)... but if I were to get into my collection of footwear I own, I would be here all day…
